Digital Picture Frame Features Explained
Why are there limits on video playback on almost all digital photo frames? Do digital frames need to support audio playback and have inbuilt speakers? These are the kinds of questions we tackle in our digital frame guides.
We help you understand what cloud and Wi-Fi capabilities enable on different digital photo frames – and if they’re worth the higher price they charge. You’ll learn how to choose a digital frame by learning how important different features are. From adjustable color and brightness settings to motion sensors and web album compatibility, you’ll learn everything here.
What are digital photo frames?
Digital photo frames are devices designed to display pictures like a normal picture frame, but with the ability to have slideshows playing and changing according to how you set them up. Digital picture frames often let you send photos through mobile apps, email, USB/SD card, and more. They usually come with internal storage and some of the higher-end models offer cloud storage.
Can digital picture frames play videos?
Video support and playback are not universally offered features. It varies between digital frame brands and even between models. Almost all digital frames have some kind of limit on video format, length, size, or resolution. It’s also worth checking if the frame can play audio that comes with videos; it’s usually done through inbuilt speakers or connectable audio output devices.
Can digital picture frames connect to the internet?
Most of the mid to high-end digital photo frames are Wi-Fi connectable. Many of the frame’s features are Wi-Fi dependent, including several of the sending/receiving methods (email, mobile app, web albums). Offline digital frames usually send/receive pictures through a combination of internal storage and USB/SD card support. Most budget digital photo frames are offline and don’t feature any kind of Wi-Fi connectivity.
How big are digital picture frames?
Digital frames come in a lot of different shapes and sizes. The measurement you see is usually in inches and represents the diagonal screen size. Bear in mind that aspect ratio also has a bearing on this measurement and can inflate a frame’s measurement (making it seem bigger than you’d experience it to be). 8–10-inch frames are probably the most popular on the market at the moment – which is evidenced by the fact that most of the top-selling digital picture frames on Amazon are 10.1-inch frames.
That being said, you can easily find 7-inch frames (and smaller) though they aren’t nearly as popular as the larger frames. 12 and 15-inch frames are sometimes offered as a larger alternative to a brand’s popular 8 or 10-inch frame. Digital photo frames larger than 15-inches are quite expensive and not nearly as common. You’ll often see these sizes with dedicated digital art frames.
